Claude Code vs Cursor

Same entry price, same top price, completely different meters. Cursor sells you an editor with a dollar wallet of model usage inside it. Claude Code sells you an agent with an hours allowance behind it. Here's how to compare them fairly, and which one is cheaper for the way you actually work.

What each one is

Cursor is a code editor (a VS Code fork) with AI built into every surface: Tab autocomplete, inline edits, chat, and an agent that can plan and run multi-file changes and cloud agents. You pick from several vendors' models, including Anthropic's, and Cursor meters what you use.

Claude Code is Anthropic's coding agent. It runs in a terminal, as a VS Code or JetBrains extension, in the browser, or in the Claude desktop app, and it drives your editor rather than replacing it. It only uses Claude models. Usage comes from a Claude subscription (Pro, Max, Team) or from an API account.

The overlap is the agent. The non-overlap is everything else: Cursor's autocomplete and editor features on one side, Claude Code's terminal-native workflow, hooks, skills, subagents and scheduled tasks on the other.

Why the meters make a fair comparison hard

Cursor's included usage is a dollar figure valued at API list prices. If Cursor Pro includes about $20 of usage and you use Claude Sonnet 5 inside it, you get about $20 of Sonnet at $2/$10 per million tokens: in the hour math from Anthropic's benchmark, that's on the order of 6 moderate hours a month before on-demand billing starts.

Claude Pro's allowance is described in hours: roughly 40–80 Sonnet hours a week. Even at the low end, that's 160 hours a month for the same $20, an API-rate value in the hundreds of dollars. Anthropic can do this because the subscription is a usage allowance with rate limits, not a token wallet. The catch is the limits: a 5-hour window and a weekly cap that pause you rather than bill you.

So for agent-heavy work, the Claude subscription delivers far more model usage per dollar, at every tier. For autocomplete-heavy work, Cursor's Tab is flat-rate and unmetered on Pro, which Claude Code doesn't offer at all. Which one is "cheaper" depends on which of those two things you do more.

Using Claude models inside Cursor

You can, and many people do, but it's the most expensive way to use them. Every Claude request in Cursor draws your included dollars at API rates and then bills on-demand. The same model on a Claude Max plan draws an hours allowance that's already paid for. If you find yourself picking Claude models in Cursor's agent most of the time, the arithmetic says move that work to Claude Code on a Max plan and keep Cursor for the editor.

The common setup: both

The $40 combination is popular for a reason. Cursor Pro (or free VS Code) for Tab completions and quick inline edits; Claude Code, from the terminal or the IDE extension, for the multi-file tasks, refactors, test runs and anything you'd hand to a junior engineer with a paragraph of instructions. The agent work is where tokens are burned, so it lands on the meter with the bigger allowance. Heavy users upgrade the Claude side to Max 5x ($120 total) long before they'd touch Cursor Pro+.

If you'll pay for only one

  • You live in the editor and want completions everywhere: Cursor Pro. Add Claude Code later if agent tasks become most of your day.
  • You want an agent that runs anywhere, including a terminal over SSH, and you'll keep your current editor: Claude Pro or Max.
  • You run agents most of the day: Claude Max 5x beats Cursor Pro+ on usage per dollar by a wide margin, and Max 20x beats Ultra.
  • You need models from more than one vendor in one tool: Cursor. Claude Code is Claude only.
  • You need unattended automation (CI, scheduled agents): Claude Code on the API, or Cursor's cloud agents, priced on-demand either way.

The tools comparison calculator adds Copilot and Codex to the same table and picks a tier from your hours.

Frequently asked questions

Is Claude Code cheaper than Cursor?

For agent-heavy use, yes: a Claude subscription's hours allowance is worth far more at API rates than Cursor's included-usage dollars. For autocomplete, Cursor's unmetered Tab is the better deal.

Can I use Claude in Cursor?

Yes, metered at API rates against Cursor's included usage. It's the most expensive way to use Claude models heavily.

Do I need both?

Many developers run both for $40: Cursor for the editor, Claude Code for agent tasks.

Does Claude Code work in VS Code?

Yes, via the extension, and in JetBrains, the terminal, the browser and the desktop app.

What's Cursor Pro+ vs Ultra?

About 3× and 20× Pro's included usage, at $60 and $200.

Which has a free tier?

Cursor Hobby is free with limited agent requests. Claude's free plan doesn't include Claude Code.
